Ex-Hollyoaks Star RICHARD CAMBRIDGE to play GT mechanic Felix in the Sony Pictures blockbuster GRAN TURISMO alongside Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet and David Harbour
Richard Cambridge (Hollyoaks, The It Crowd) will portray the character ‘Felix’ in the highly anticipated Sony Pictures blockbuster, GRAN TURISMO, set to hit cinemas and IMAX screens in August. The film stars Richard Cambridge, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, David Harbour and Djimon Hounsou. Neil Blompkamp’s GRAN TURISMO is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfilment of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.
To prepare for his role as Felix, Cambridge trained with professional GT mechanic Szilard Racz at the Formula 1 circuit Nürburgring in Germany and learnt to change tires in minutes! He impressed the professionals enough to change the tires for real on camera and regularly beat or matched their times. For GT cars, (unlike F1) one team of who changed the tires. In Dubai this was undertaken in a full fireproof suit at nearly 40°C (over 100°F). Richard shares “With GT cars as we had in Dubai, it’s just a team of 2 – so the pressure was on as the cars came in. I had 500 extras, plus one of Hollywood’s biggest directors, plus David Harbour and Orlando Bloom looking on whilst I am the one with the wheel gun, changing all four tyres under the clock with just Szilard who trained me as the assistant handing me the tyres. The drivers tear out of the pit lane at full power after a change so there is no margin for error.”
Richard Cambridge’s career began to take off when he landed his first lead role in the Sundance feature film DISTANT BRIDGES. He rose to fame as fan favourite Peter Webster in the popular British TV series HOLLYOAKS. Cambridge showcased his talent in the hit show THE IT CROWD and the movie GOLDEN YEARS. He won numerous Best Actor awards including Best Actor at the London Movie Awards and Outstanding Achievement Award at the Indie Shorts Fest for his role on MAN MADE.
Beyond his acting pursuits, Richard Cambridge is also a co-founder of the actors’ community and app WeAudition. Founded in 2015, this platform has become Hollywood’s largest self-tape reader-on-demand network, providing actors with opportunities to earn money by serving as scene partners and assisting fellow actors in their self-tape audition process.
GRAN TURISMO can be seen in theatres this August.
