The Curse of Modigliani, a new English-language psychological drama from Finnish director Diana Ringo, was released on 7th of December Amazon Prime.

Shot entirely in Helsinki, the film stars British actor Edward Pishiyski (The Sandman, Black Mirror) as Max, a struggling American painter whose discovery of an antique diary triggers a haunting descent into obsession, eerily mirroring the tragic life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Ringo also stars as Max’s love interest, Julia.

Synopsis – An American painter in Helsinki, Max struggles to establish himself until he discovers an antique diary he believes once belonged to Amedeo Modigliani. What begins as inspiration soon turns into obsession, leading Max down a haunting spiral of eerie visions, addiction, and self-destruction. His passionate yet toxic relationship with Julia, a devoted dancer, and his friendship-turned-betrayal with art manager Leo mirror the tragic fate of Modigliani himself. As his career unravels and manipulation tightens its grip, Max teeters on the edge of genius and madness—unable to escape the path he’s doomed to follow.

The feature blends expressionistic visuals, dance sequences, and an original score by Ringo to explore the destructive power of artistic fixation. The narrative acts as a psychological meditation on the sacrifices artists make and challenges the modern art world, suggesting that “genuine talent is becoming ever more overlooked.”

The film features original paintings by acclaimed artist Elena Ringo and relies heavily on local Finnish talent alongside Pishiyski.

The Curse of Modigliani is available now to buy or rent on Amazon Prime.

Film critic Albert Valentin of WorldFilmGeek gave The Curse of Modigliani an “A” rating, praising the film as a tense and emotional roller coaster — Valentin specifically highlighted Edward Pishiyski’s performance as Max, noting, “Pishiyski is great in the role of Max, the artist who slowly finds himself going from a struggling artist to becoming obsessed after finding the diary that is believed to be that of Modigliani. His performance may remind viewers of something similar to Jack Nicholson in The Shining.”
