Phil Dunn’s OSCAR® & BAFTA qualified short THE STUPID BOY returns to its roots

Buzz, Film

Having qualified for the OSCARs and BAFTAs 2024, after winning 42 awards at more than 70 festivals worldwide, proudly Brixton-based short film THE STUPID BOY is returning to its birthplace for a night that will be as much of a celebration of Brixton creativity and spirit as the film was itself to make.

Phil Dunn’s THE STUPID BOY follows a neurodivergent teen in Brixton, south London who comes face-to-face with a white supremacist, in an intensely moving finale in Brixton Village – an encounter where choosing love would – for most of us – not be an option.

The evening begins with a special screening of THE STUPID BOY at Brixton’s Ritzy Picturehouse Cinema followed by a Q&A with director, cast and crew, plus special guests and entertainment including live music and spoken word. Entertainment will include live music from the Brixton Chamber Orchestra, who revel in innovative collaborations with all sorts of artists and genres: Grime to Gospel, Disco to Drum and Bass, Classical to Jazz, and everything in between. Brixton’s own orchestra, this registered charity is a product of local talent and the unique blend of creative energy and cultural diversity which characterises the area. Their programme will include The Stupid Boy original score. There’ll also be spoken word and performance from Brixton Youth Theatre, whose mission is to empower young people to define their own lives by expanding their horizons via access to performing arts activities, with support from theatre, film and TV professionals including patron and actress Jane Horrocks. The production of The Stupid Boy were able to offer paid opportunities to members of Brixton Youth Theatre during filming, and, in a full circle moment, one of the runners will be performing with Brixton Chamber Orchestra during this event.
There’ll then be a walk-through Brixton Village (filming location of the film’s pivotal scene) on the way to the Afterparty at Lost In Brixton, headlined by an exclusive DJ Set by Andy Cato of Groove Armada and Spooky Cash-Cash.

Full ticket holders will also enjoy complimentary food and drinks, provided by local businesses based in and around Brixton Village including The Clink Bakery at HMP Brixton, pizza from Franco Manca courtesy of Wildfarmed, a selection of tasty bites from Oowee Vegan, and drinks courtesy of Brixton Brewery, Brixton Gin and Brixton Distillery’s Market Row Rum.

Full ticket £25 (including complimentary food and drinks), after party only £10. With support from Squire & Partners and Brixton Bid, and with all profits from the night going to charity Choose Love, a pioneering new movement in humanitarian aid who’ve raised millions to support refugees and created a movement of people putting love into action around the world. This event will specifically support their “Civilians Must Not Be A Target” Humanitarian Appeal.
