Revealed: Eternals second most popular Marvel film, according to Twitter fans
Eternals – the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – has been named the second most popular franchise film among fans on Twitter, a new analysis has revealed.
Film Franchise Crossovers looks to name which blockbuster franchises – including Marvel, Star Wars and DC – are best-suited to an onscreen collaboration, based on their profitability, popularity and format, as well as which instalments of each franchise are fans’ favourites.
The Twitter Sentiment Analysis involves pulling together every Tweet made about one of the Marvel movies over the last decade, and assigns a positivity/negativity score to each.
The findings show that Eternals – the new cosmic MCU movie starring Angelina Jolie that hits screens on 5th Nov – has seen the second highest influx of positive Tweets over the last decade, coming behind James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
This will be controversial for many, given the film hit headlines earlier this week for becoming the lowest-rated Marvel film on Rotten Tomatoes – overtaking Thor: The Dark World.
That suggests there’s a discrepancy between the opinion of reviewers on critic sites and those on social media – which may not come as a surprise to many, as online forums have speculated that negative ratings on critic sites are greatly exaggerated or falsified.
Also among the favourite films on Twitter were Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Ant Man (2018), while the least popular movies came out as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk.
Top 10 most popular Marvel films on Twitter
1 – Guardians of the Galaxy
2 – Eternals
3 – Marvel’s The Avengers
4 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier
5 – Spider-Man: Far From Home
6 – Ant-Man
7 – Black Widow
8 – Iron Man 2
9 – Thor: Ragnarok
10 – Thor: The Dark World
Also interesting is that Thor: The Dark World proves one of the most positively-reviewed flicks on Twitter -despite being the previously worst-rated on Rotten Tomatoes.
As well as looking at the fan reception of MCU movies, the study looked to name which franchise films – of all 116 analysed – prove the most popular with fans online.
And it was Ghostbusters Afterlife that took the top spot, having seen the highest influx of positive Tweets over the last five years than any other franchise film, including Avengers Endgame, Dark Knight, and The Fellowship of the Ring.
Other key findings from the analysis include the characters that are best-suited to a potential onscreen interaction, the highest-rated franchise films, and the highest-earning franchises.
