Wong Kar-Wai backs initiative to boost Hong Kong film industry
Veteran Chinese filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai is among directors backing a new government-funded initiative to re-energise Hong Kong’s film industry, following the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Funding of HK$100m is available under the new Directors’ Succession Scheme in partnership with the Hong Kong Film Development Fund, and Kar-Wai will work alongside young filmmakers to produce projects using a government subsidy, with Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Edward Yau, commenting ‘As a result of social events and the epidemic, local film production and investment have shrunk, posing acute challenges to the trade and practitioners in the past year.
The Government is therefore committed to providing multi-pronged support for the trade to go through this difficult period and sustaining the success story of Hong Kong films’.
