GATHERINGS | New Documentary Series Exploring British Folk Traditions

Buzz, Film, Reviews

Ten80 Productions are excited to announce the upcoming release of their new six-part documentary series, Gatherings, which will be available to buy on Apple TV, YouTube & Amazon Prime Video from 6 October.

Gatherings explores Britain’s most enduring folk traditions — ancient games, customs and rituals that continue to bring communities together in remarkable ways.

Filmed entirely on location and told solely through the voices of those who organise and take part, the series offers a rare, unfiltered portrait of Britain’s living folklore. Via the use of unseen archives, the films explore how these living traditions are passed down through generations, and we see why they are thriving today.

Filmmaker Dave Brewis takes a deliberately observational, participant-led approach—eschewing narration and voiceover to let the events and communities speak for themselves. Shot across England and Scotland, the series captures six remarkable gatherings including The Burry Man of South Queensferry, Rushbearing at Sowerby Bridge and Haxey Hood in North Lincolnshire.

Director Dave Brewis on the inspiration for the series: “I wanted to make space for the people who carry these traditions—the custodians, not commentators. By listening rather than explaining, we discover something deeper: our instinct to gather, our need for belonging and our connection to place.”
