This March, in celebration of International Women’s Day,

Rakuten TV has compiled a collection of compelling movie gems made by female filmmakers.

Whether you are looking for a thriller, action, romance or comedy, there is something for everyone in this selection of fantastic films helmed by award-winning directors.

Kicking the list off is Patty Jenkins’ smash-hit Wonder Woman (4K HDR), starring Gal Gadot portraying the kick-ass and empathetic Amazonian superhero, in this epic origin story from DC Comics.

From Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow comes the critically-acclaimed The Hurt Locker, a raw, hard-hitting and thought-provoking drama based on the Iraq war. Bigelow was the first woman to win the coveted Best Director Oscar for the thriller. If you’re still action-hungry, another of Bigelow’s titles that will feed your appetite is Point Breaka beloved cult classic starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in a cat and mouse game between the FBI and a group of surfers moonlighting as bank robbers.

The historical drama Selma, brought to you by award-winning director Ava DuVernay, will also be available on Rakuten TV and will undoubtedly leave you pensive and inspired due to DuVernay’s skillful storytelling.

Amma Asante’s Belle is another film that will be newly available and that, like Selma, unapologetically tackles societal issues such as class and race.

For those looking for some comedy, the feel-good 80’s classic Bigdirected by the legendary Penny Marshall, is available. This heartwarming fantasy stars Tom Hanks as teenager Josh, whose wish to be grown up overnight is granted via the help of a fortune-telling machine.

Another comedy available, which will take the pace up a notch is the hilarious, action-packed, The Spy Who Dumped Me (4K HDR).  Directed by Susanna Fogel, the caper stars comedy duo Mila Kunis and Melissa McCarthy as best friends who are unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy.

Rounding out the list is French director Coralie Fargeat’s intense, action thriller debut Revenge; stylish and clever with a strong heroine lead.  After a romantic getaway takes a sinister turn, a woman’s survival soon begins a relentless quest for revenge.

All this and more is available on Rakuten TV to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th.
