Documentary film, ‘Love Around the World’, written and directed by Anđela & Davor Rostuhar, will begin its UK and Ireland tour in London on 27th September 2022 before going on a trip across the country (England, Wales, Scotland and then onto Ireland).

‘Love Around the World’ is a beautiful, culturally, and socially relevant documentary film created when photographer, adventurer, and globetrotter Davor Rostuhar and his wife Anđela turned their honeymoon into a year-long exploration of the meaning of love. On their journey, they travelled across 6 continents, visited 30 countries, and met hundreds of people. They conducted 120 interviews with different types of people, in all types of relationships, asking them the same questions about love and relationships, diving deep into the most intimate notions of humanity and love that we all share, regardless of the cultures we are born into. They shot thousands of photos, collected umpteen hours of video material and transformed this inspiring experience into a documentary film, book and travelling exhibition, showing the complexity of love in the 21st century.

From deep within the Amazonian forests, to remote villages in the Himalayas, small Pacific countries and African slums, all the way to the world’s largest metropolises, this stunning documentary shows us 33 different stories about love and marriage, the highs and lows, the challenges and struggles, creating a great love story that reminds us how love can never be simple, but at the same time, how just a few things on Earth are quite as simple as love.

‘Love Around the World’ searches for the definition of love through real-life experiences and emotions, whilst also showing the role that religion, culture, politics, and personal circumstance has on relationships. It makes us ask the question, what is love? A question most of us have no doubt asked ourselves at least once in our lifetime, perhaps it is even one of life’s biggest questions?

Is love something stronger than cultural norms or something entirely shaped by society? What makes some people spend their whole lives together whilst others break up after just a couple of months? Is love universal? Does it have the power to correct injustices inherited from society? Can it help us bridge the gap between our differences and become better individuals, or is it just another story that we like to tell ourselves? Can love really be defined in words? Is love dependent on people, or is it a state of being?

In 2020, more than half of all marriages around the world were still arranged by families or matchmakers. A large majority of people marry within the same social class, religion, and ethnicity. Those who don’t follow religious or cultural norms risk their lives for love in some countries. Gay couples in Iran still face the death penalty. Certain inter-caste couples from India risk being honour-killed by their families. Polyamorous families are still not legal and face social stigma even in the richest countries of the Western world.

“Love around the World” attempts to provide an extensive, honest, and intimate presentation of romantic relationships between people around the world. It shows how easy it is to discriminate against, or discredit, systems and traditions that we might not fully understand, whilst also revealing the many obstacles and barriers to love that stem from social, religious, psychological and biological aspects alike, reminding us how we might take our own system of romantic values for granted. What makes this film dramatically and visually compelling is the mosaic storytelling of deeply different experiences. Although each relationship is defined on one level by differing psychological, religious, cultural and social circumstances, on another level they share many similarities – they all fight with their partners, they all have doubts and insecurities, they all have wishes and desires. They all love, in their own way.
