Puccini’s Madama Butterfly returns to cinemas worldwide

The Royal Opera’s tragically beautiful production of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly will be broadcast live on Tuesday 26 March 2024 to over 966 cinemas across 22 countries around the world. Encore screenings will run from Sunday 31 March 2024.

With its exquisite score and drawing inspiration from 19th-century European images of Japan, Moshe Leiser’s and Patrice Caurier’s production is as moving as it is heartbreaking. The production will mark Asmik Grigorian’s House debut as Cio-Cio-San following critically acclaimed performances in Rusalka (2023) and Jenůfa (2021). She stars alongside Joshua Guerrero, who is reprising his role as Lieutenant Pinkerton, Jette Parker Artists Programme alumni, Hongni Wu (Suzuki), Lauri Vasar (Sharpless) and Ya-Chung Huang (Goro).

With a score that includes some of the most heartbreaking music its composer ever wrote – conductor Kevin John Edusei will lead the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Madama Butterfly will be playing live in cinemas on Tuesday 26 March 2024 at 7.15pm (GMT), with Encore screenings from Sunday 31 March 2024 at 2pm (BST).
