Avatar 2 is the most hotly anticipated franchise film of 2022, new research has revealed.

The study by comparison site Casino Bee found that even though 13 years have passed since the release of its predecessor, Avatar 2 is the most searched franchise film of 2022, with 1.2 million searches worldwide every month – the highest of any franchise film releasing this year.

Avatar 2 follows on from the success of the 2009 box office smash Avatar, which took the world by storm when it became the highest grossing film of all time, taking a whopping $2.8 billion in revenue at the box office. Critics chalked this up to the ground-breaking visual effects as well as the mass marketing prior to its release.

Avatar 2 just edges out superhero runner up, The Batman, which receives 1.1 million monthly searches worldwide.

Matt Reeves’ adaptation of the DC comic book franchise sees yet another retelling of the Batman origin story, this time with a darker and grittier edge, starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader. The Batman will be available in cinemas on 4th March 2022.

Despite coming in at second place worldwide, The Batman proves to be the most popular among American and British audiences, as the number one most searched franchise in both the US and the UK.

Coming in at third place worldwide is Marvel’s fourth instalment of the hammer wielding Asgard avenger in, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder racks up an impressive 1.01 million searches worldwide every month and will see Chris Hemsworth reprise the role alongside co-stars Natalie Portman and Christian Bale on 6th May 2022.

The fourth and fifth most searched worldwide franchises go to John Wick: Chapter 4 and Top Gun: Maverick respectively.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will see the return of Keanu Reeves as the titular character, chronicling his story as the out of retirement former assassin. The film amassed a smaller but still impressive 750,000 searches worldwide each month.

Top Gun: Maverick follows closely behind with 739,000 searches worldwide each month. The sequel sees the original cast return to screens 36 years after the iconic original and is likely to appeal to audiences of all ages.

A spokesperson from Casino Bee commented on the findings: “Avatar remains the highest grossing film of all time, so it is not surprising that 13 years on, fans are happy to part with their money once again. Director, James Cameron, seems to have acknowledged the franchise’s success and has three sequels in production between now and 2028.”

“The data also reflects a continuing demand for movie adaptations of comic book superheroes. In fact, superhero films account for two of the five most searched worldwide, which indicates there is still a high demand for the genre, despite the market already being highly saturated.”
