Special Anniversary Cinema Release of THE SNOWMAN™ and THE SNOWMAN™ AND THE SNOWDOG Brings the Magic of Christmas to the Big Screen this Winter

Buzz, Film

To celebrate 40 years of THE SNOWMAN™ and 10 years of THE SNOWMAN™ AND THE SNOWDOG film adaptations, Penguin Random House Children’s is planning a limited theatrical release of both films which will be available in over 70 ODEON cinemas nationwide.

This hour-long theatrical screening will offer families the chance to experience the magical World of The Snowman™ like never before, with a double-bill of both film adaptions showing at ODEON cinemas for 6 weeks from 25th November 2022.

Audiences will be enchanted by this big screen presentation shown in surround sound and will be able to appreciate the exquisite hand-drawn animation technique, that was used in the making of both film adaptations, replicating Raymond Briggs’ beautiful illustrative style as the stories are brought to life for the ultimate experience of this treasured Christmas tradition.

THE SNOWMAN was created in 1978 by the late author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, as a wordless picture book, told entirely through hand-drawn pencil and crayon illustrations. The story follows a boy, James, who builds a snowman in his garden one winter’s day. That night The Snowman comes to life and a magical adventure begins. Producer John Coates first adapted THE SNOWMAN as an animation, which launched on Channel 4 in the channel’s inaugural year in 1982. The film was a huge success, earning an Academy Award nomination and winning a BAFTA TV award. It has been broadcast every Christmas on Channel 4 in the 40 years since.

In 2012, the highly anticipated sequel was announced; THE SNOWMAN™ AND THE SNOWDOG premiered on Channel 4 on 24th December 2012 and was seen by over 10 million viewers during that festive period. THE SNOWMAN AND THE SNOWDOG takes place in the same house that features in THE SNOWMAN and tells the story of a boy, Billy, who discovers a snowman-making kit hidden under the floorboards of his new home on Christmas Eve. Billy builds a snowman and, with a little leftover snow, a snowdog. As the clock strikes midnight, the two come to life and Billy joins them on a magical, fun-filled journey across the skies to attend a party filled with more snowpeople and even Father Christmas himself!

This winter, Penguin Random House Children’s will celebrate two magical milestones, commemorating Ten Years of Friendship and Fun with THE SNOWMAN AND THE SNOWDOG and 40 years of THE SNOWMAN film adaptation with a series of special live events and digital activations. Puffin has released The Snowman: The Book of the Classic Film, £7.99, and is out now.
