Ali Asgari’s OSCAR® Qualifying OVER MIJ – virginity is not all that defines a woman

Ali Asgari’s OVER MIJ is a hard hitting reality for many young girls and women in today’s day and age. We follow a girl and her father on their way to the hospital, what unfolds when they arrive will leave you shocked to the core. Ali Asgari is currently on a traveling and creative ban in his home country of Iran after the World Premiere of his film TERRESTRIAL VERSES, his passport was subdued upon arrival and the ban was issued. Since this devastating news Asgari wanted to make sure that his latest film OVER MIJ not only touched the hearts of many but also acted as a plea to the world to not objectify women to such degrading heights as to check whether they are deemed pure in the eyes of their loved ones. After OVER MIJ’s successful World Premiere at Warsaw Film Festival in 2022 it went on to have it’s US Premiere at the prestigious Palm Springs Film Festival in 2023 and has since had international success in over 30 film festivals this year. OVER MIJ has qualified to be considered for a 2024 OSCAR®.

Writer/Director Ali Asgari was born in Tehran, Iran, he is a prominent Iranian cinema figure with many International awards to his name. Two of his shorts, MORE THAN TWO HOURS and THE SILENCE were nominated for Palme d’Or at Festival de Cannes and THE BABY was in the short film competition of Venice Film Festival 2014. His films are concerned with precarious lives who live at society’s margin in his native country Iran. His debut film DISAPPEARANCE was developed at the Cinefondation residency of Festival De Cannes and had its world and North American premiere at Venice International Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival 2017. UNTIL TOMORROW his second feature film was premiered in Berlinale 2022. TERRESTRIAL VERSES his third feature film was premiered in the Un certain regard section of Festival de Cannes 2023. He is a member of the Academy® of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His current film OVER MIJ has qualified to be considered for a 2024 Academy® Award.
Producer Maryam Tarami was born in Teheran, Iran, and raised in the Netherlands. She is a producer, actress and entrepreneur. Maryam studied acting at the Drama Academy and Actors Studio in Los Angeles. Later she enrolled at the University of Twente to study International Business. In 2019, she founded her own production company Damondi Works to stimulate international collaborations in the Netherlands. Her shorts have traveled to festivals worldwide and won several awards. OVER MIJ is one of her latest shorts which she, among other reasons, produced for women empowerment.
