Written in the stars: Meet the actors who fell for their directors

Buzz, Film

The long-awaited psychological thriller ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ (featuring the one and only Harry Styles) is due to hit our screens this week (23rd September) and it’s fair to say we’re already counting down the days until its release.

As director of the film, Olivia Wilde is in fact partnered with Mr Styles himself, the team at WeThrift have gone through the years to reveal the other stars who have been in relationships with their directors.

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes

The love story between Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes began in the early 00’s, when Mendes tried to convince Kate to perform in a play he was directing in London. Despite rejecting the role, the two maintained a close relationship and married in 2003.

Mendes later went on to direct 2008 drama ‘Revolutionary Road’, where Kate acted alongside her former Titanic co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. It was then two years that the couple announced their divorce.

Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Even though it may not have worked out in real life for Georgia and Robbie in ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’, Aaron Johnson went on to find his true love on the set of his hit film ‘Nowhere Boy’.

However, this wasn’t just any love – Aaron ended up getting married to the film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson. Despite there being a 23-year age gap between the two, the couple are still going strong today and even have two daughters together.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

This list would not be complete without the mention of former Hollywood super-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Having acted together, Angelina also directed Brad in romance ‘By the Sea’, just a few weeks after their 2014 wedding.

Helen Bonham Carter and Tim Burton

It’s a gothic romance like no other. Directing ‘Planet of the Apes’ back in 2001, Burton met Helen and the two instantly had a connection. He later went on to direct her in hit films such as ‘Big Fish’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Corpse Bride’.

The couple were together for thirteen years before calling it off at the end of December.

Rosario Dawson and Danny Boyle

A relationship short but sweet, Rosaria Dawson and Danny Boyle fell for each other just after the production wrapped for 2013 crime-drama ‘Trance’. Despite meeting years earlier on a scrapped project, it was ‘Trance’ that introduced them together.

Unfortunately, the couple had split before the film was even released which made for an awkward press tour.

Kristen Stewart and Rupert Sanders

Prepare for drama… whilst Kristen Stewart starred in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, photos surfaced of her kissing the director Rupert Sanders whilst she was still in a relationship with Robert Pattinson!

Stewart had to release a public apology to Pattinson which subsequently ended their relationship. Rupert’s wife and the mother of his children immediately divorced from the director.
